Weda Resort is currently Under Renovations (Last Updated February 9, 2026)
Weda Resort has been under renovations now since October 2025! We’re hoping to be able to open this year. However, we’ll be more focused in only providing accommodations as a nature resort located in our own 20 Hectare nature reserve. Diving & Birdwatching will still be unavailable unfortunately because of the severe environmental changes in the Weda Region due to the expanding industry.
Wedaresort.com will be continuously updated with the newest information as renovations take place. If you’re interested in following the latest news regarding Weda Resort, feel free to reach out on Whatsapp at +62 821-9047-8289 (Adrian)

Since we closed in 2020, we’ve still been maintaining our Bungalows, specifically our one room cottages (Cottage 1,2,3,4). However, other cottages, requires heavy renovations are currently under-construction.
Latest updates on our renovations of Weda Resort:
Our most recent progress in renovations (As of February 9, 2026):
- The road to the resort has been improved! Vehicles can now access the resort (Although the road renovations are not finished yet)
- We’ve replaced our water-pump at the resort,
- We have electricity (although limited) thanks to our generator.
- The Restaurant has been renovated with a new roof, only requiring a fresh coat of paint and it’ll be ready.
- We’ve completely renovated our Longhouse cottage (A.ka Cottage 8). While not at all finished in its renovations, we’ve replaced the walls completely and the next goal would be the roof.

What’s next?
- Renovations of our Kindergarten & Education foundation in Sawai Itepo.
- The road to the resort absolutely requires a bit of clearing and renovations, as it’s a tad bit overgrown. At the moment the only access is on foot or by motorcycle.
- Cottages 1,2,3,4 is ready for stay! However, it could most certainly be better with renovations of the bathroom, new paint, furniture, etc.
- The Restaurant & Lounge has always been the center of the resort; with the most recent renovations we only need to prepare the kitchen and the furniture left, and with the road access repaired we’ve planned in opening a recreational area & restaurant for the public.
- Permanent power, good water pressure, and hot water is a must. This is something we’re still working towards.

Will we offer Birdwatching & Diving when all the renovations are finished?
Unfortunately this is unlikely, at least not in the first year when we’ll open again. There’s been massive environmental changes in the Weda Region both in the forests and underwater life due to the expanding industry but also due to the rapidly growing population. We’ll have to survey Weda again one day to see what has changed.
On the bright side! We’ve been successful in protecting the nature around Weda Resort, and there’s been so much more birds and forests growing in our 20 Hectare nature reserve.

How is the Sawai Ecotourism Foundation doing?
Our foundation is still continuing its educational initiatives and kindergarten programs at the desa of Sawai Itepo at Weda! We’re also looking forward in the coming months to begin renovating our Kindergartens.
Though, unfortunately we lost the domain and website for the Sawai-Ecotourism Foundation. Fortunately, however! The website for Sawai-Ecotourism was partially preserved by the Internet Archive, and you can still view it on this link: web.archive.org/web/20130703020430/http://www.sawai-ecotourism.com/
Any updates and developments on our foundation we’ll post on wedaresort.com for now.
As for the 800 Hectare forests we’re still doing our best to protect it with our foundation. However, since 2020 we’ve gotten into a lot of difficulties in doing this due to illegal logging, poaching, land claims, and also the plans for the industry to expand within our protected forests. We’re very actively dealing with these matter with the proper authorities.

You can also view the species of birds we’ve identified within the foundation’s forest at our Bird-list page. wedaresort.com/birds-list/
We are grateful that all of our former employees have successfully secured new employment opportunities, and we extend our heartfelt appreciation for their exceptional work throughout the years. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to our esteemed guests and friends for their unwavering support over the past decade.

REMOTE & AMAZING DIVING
Until recent, Weda Bay was an unknown spot on the dive map of the world. Now 90% of our guests, many of whom have been diving in several other places in Indonesia, including Raja Ampat and Wakatobi, think it was their best diving and snorkeling ever!
Our three boats are fast and comfortable. In this way we can cover a diving area greater than Bunaken National Park. Apart from the coastal reefs and the many beautiful reefs within 5 kilometers from the resort, there are many reefs about 10 kilometers out of the shore. The furthest reefs we visit are 28 kilometers East of the resort, and to the South we go as far as 35 kilometers (1 hour trip, one way).
Weda offers easy diving with hardly any current, along steep drop-offs with caverns and schools of fish, coral covered slopes, perfect shallow reef tops, bays with seahorses and other critters, and for the adventurous diver, an underwater mountain with big pelagic fish and a Japanese shipwreck. A nice detail: there are no other divers 300 Km around. Have a look at the Images of the underwater-world of Weda Resort to see the underwater paradise on offer here. Weda Reef & Rainforest Resort is open the whole year. However, due to strong winds and waves during July and August, we do not offer any diving from 1 June until 15 September.

| Divers Lodge Lembeh opened in 2002, when not many people knew about Lembeh Strait yet, and Weda Reef & Rainforest Resort opened in 2011. After 4 years of preparation we opened in 2018 the dream of Linda at the Island Rao, where she was born. This Island with one of the most beautiful beaches is near Morotai, North Halmahera. Diving there is in one word: spectacular. We can easily make a great combination of these different destinations for you. We will arrange all necessary arrangements and transfers. Three paradises, one owner. Divers Lodge Lembeh (diving all year),Magic Bay Rao (diving 15 May – 15 Sept.)Weda Resort (diving 15 Sept. – 01 June)Please mail for any length of stay and preferred dive-package at these resorts. |
BIRDING PARADISE
It’s paradise on land as well; there are two species of Birds of Paradise in our own forest. In a circle of only 25 Km around the resort, we spotted almost all of the more than 35 endemic species of Halmahera/North Moluccan birds. Together with the local community, we started a foundation for education and conservation of the primary forest and it’s wildlife: http://www.sawai-ecotourism.com/ We are proud to be able to protect 850 Hectares of primary jungle, home of the Wallace’s Standardwing Bird of Paradise, many other species of birds and other wildlife.
This is absolutely the best place in the world to observe this beautiful inhabitant of paradise. You can also find the legendary Wallace Golden Birdwing and Ulysses butterflies here. On this website you will find an overview of the List of Halmahera birds we spotted and there are great images of birds and flora and fauna of Halmahera in the Gallery, too. Our foundation also manages a Sea Turtle conservation project, Kindergarten and other projects.
EXCELLENT CUISINE

Our open-air restaurant offers a great view at the forest and sea. Here the guests have their meals, family style, together at one table. The restaurant and lounge are smoke-free, but there is a separated part where one can sit and smoke without disturbing the other guests. The tasty and healthy meals are always freshly prepared. The Indonesian dishes really taste Indonesian, without being too spicy. Instead of only traditional frying of the vegetables, we also serve them steamed. There is extra home-made sambal for the guests who like it “very hot”. Pastas, potatoes and home-made bread are served to offer an alternative for rice and noodles. We do not use MSG nor palm oil in our kitchen and all food is Halal. Of course, we also cater for vegetarians, vegans and guests with other special dietary requirements.
Below is a video put together by Marcelo Johan Ogata and gives you an glimpse of the underwater world of Halmahera. Enjoy!
Below is a short movie which gives a good impression of Weda Resort and its nature around.
Below is some unique footage of a new species of a walking shark found in Weda Bay.
Weda Reef and Rainforest Resort is a sister company of Divers Lodge Lembeh and Magic Bay Rao Beach Bungalows
